Description
The Sand Hutton wagon model kit is based on the two and half ton wagons built by P. & W. MacLellan of Glasgow to a War Office design. Seventy five of these 18 inch gauge wagons were supplied to Deptford Special Reserve Depot for use on the extensive 18″ gauge railway system there. These 75 wagons were then sold to the Sand Hutton Light Railway in Yorkshire in 1921 as “war surplus”.
The wagons were of particularly rugged construction with thick wooden components bolted together with longitudinal and transverse bars. The main feature of the design was that complete body could be lifted off the chassis (four lifting eyes were securely bolted to the body ends) by crane to facilitate the swift loading of ships. The Sand Hutton found this feature useful and made a number of customised bodies for the carriage of straw and other awkward sized loads.

This kit features:
Easy to assemble chassis
The model features the characteristic one piece outside pedestal bearings. The chassis parts are cut from premium quality Poplar plywood which slot together to give a nice “square” chassis ensuring good running characteristics with a greatly reduced risk of derailment.
Metal Wheels
The mark 2 version of this kit now includes our new 7/8 profile, 30mm diameter steel wheels together with 3D printed inserts to make them look the prototype “semi spoked” design
Laser Cut Bodywork
The wagon body is cut from premium quality poplar plywood. Both sides of the body work have engraved plank details so that wagon looks good even if no load is being carried. The body can be left to lift of the chassis as per prototype
3D Printed Sintered Nylon Detailing
The Sand Hutton wagon kit includes several detail parts 3D printed in SLS nylon. These include the end support brackets, door hinges, latch mechanism and the distinctive axle box castings. They come pre-coloured in a satin “charcoal black” finish.
Hook and Chain couplings
Paint and glue not included
